LITTLE GODS shortlisted for the 2019 Stella Prize
Little Gods received excellent reviews in The Australian newspaper, The Age/SMH, The Saturday Paper and at various online outlets. Louise Swinn in The Australian says ‘Ackland’s Australian forebears here are Christina Stead, Miles Franklin and Amy Witting. Maybe Olive is our Scout Finch.’
EA in The Saturday Paper says Little Gods ‘[is] lyrically written… Australian to its core and both nostalgic and razor-sharp” and “farcical; laugh-out-loud funny and desperately sad.’

The Australian said: ‘[The Secret Son] is rich in complications and worthy of Ackland’s varied narrative gifts. She has a keen sense of characters’ capacity for distracting reverie and she is also adept at elision: releasing information with unexpected and telling effects.’
‘Ackland [has] given us [a first novel] that reshape[s] familiar historical material with originality and dash; sustains [her] strange tales with assurance; move[s] confidently between countries and eras, intimate and national histories; [AND] offer[s] [one] more indication of the present and future health of Australian fiction.’
